Montagano, Province Campobasso, Molise, Italy

The village is all built in white stone, and the fields around are neat and intensively farmed. Tradition is that parish priest Damiano Petrone (1659-1710) after confessing the peasants gave them as penance to plant trees and vines, and also offered them money to buy tools. Montagano rises on one side of the Biferno river, where once was ancient Fagifulae, a Samnite town which in the 4th century B.C. sided with Hannibal against Rome, and later became a Roman "municipium".

What to see

Church of Sant'Antonio, at the entrance of the town, with a 19th century facade.
Parish church of Santa Maria Assunta, with a beautiful belltower.
The Medieval Castle, at the top of the hill.
The Abbey of Santa Maria di Farfula, a little away from the village, which was destroyed in the 1805 earthquake and then restored. In this Abbey Pietro Angelieri (later Pope Celestino V) spent the early years of his religious life and was also an abbot.
