In a document written by Pope Lucio III there is mention of this center as belonging to condottiere Landolfo di Montelongo, who defended it against the Normans. For three centuries, from 1561 to 1811 Montelongo belonged to the Province of Capitanata (Foggia) then was included in Molise.
