Province Campobasso

Montemitro, Province Campobasso, Molise, Italy

Founded by a community from Croatia in 1461 under the leadership of Giorgio Castriota Skanderberg. The population still speaks a Slavic dialect. With Acquaviva Collecroce and San Felice del Molise this village is being studied by anthropologists and language specialists, and the population feel they are both Molisani and Croatians at the same time. They still keep ancient traditions, like the hand-weaving of blankets and tablecloths, and have a deep devotion to their patron saint Lucia, native of Ragusa (today Dubrovnick); also the folk songs are a rich heritage of this place.
