San Giovanni in Galdo, Province Campobasso, Molise, Italy

The presence of an Italic temple of the 2nd century BC show that this was a center of some importance for the Samnites. In the 10th century there was a small borough called "Castelluccio", which should correspond with the area now called "Morrutto". The village was a fiefdom of the church and the name of San Giovanni probably refers to the deep worship of the saint; as a matter of fact, also the coat of arms of the municipality shows the lamb and the cross of St. John the Baptist. An etymology of the words "in Galdo" may be from the German "Wald", meaning forest, which probably referred to the woods that surrounded the center in the past.
