Province Isernia

Castel San Vincenzo, Province Isernia, Molise, Italy

Against the background of the Matese, the town is formed by two different settlements which joined together, Castellone al Volturno and San Vincenzo al Volturno. Castel San Vincenzo rose as a fortress in defense of San Vincenzo al Volturno, and was part of a system of castles that protected the Benedictines against Saracen. Very soon the settlement grew with families working in the fields of the monastery. In 1442 it became independent and in 1585 came under the rule of the De Regina family, who were lords of the place until feudalism was abolished in 1807.
