Montenero Valcocchiara, Province Isernia, Molise, Italy

Amid a carsic territory, the landscape is typical for its terraced fields. In the North is the Sangro Valley, in the East a deep valley called "Il Pantano", which was the bottom of an ancient lake, 3 km long and 1 km wide. Montenero is a picturesque medieval borough, with the houses all built in grey stone. The first settlement dates back to the 10th century, and was probably established by Benedictine monks.
