The town is situated 26 km north-east of Cuneo and 71 km south of Turin, along the left bank of the Stura river and the Torino-Savigliano-Cuneo railway line.

HISTORY:

Founded in 1236 by the Guelph league as a free commune, it came after some decades under the influence of Asti; in 1304 it chose to be included under the rule of the Saluzzo marquis, who then passed it to the Savoy-Acaya family in 1314.

WHAT TO SEE:

  • the 14th-century Castle, originally a fortress and residence of the Acaya Prince, which was changed by Amadeus VIII, Duke of Savoy, into a Renaissance mansion on a project by Gaspare Solari;
  • the Cathedral, preserving the reliques of St. Giovenale;
  • the baroque Palazzo del Comandante, originally the mansion of the fortress commander, with frescoes by Michele Antonio Milocco (Turin, 1690 – 1772).

EVENTS:

  • the Palio dei Borghi and Giostra dell'Oca, a historical re-enactement taking place during the weekend before the last in June, a competition among archers representing the different boroughs with mobile targets in the form of geese.
