HISTORY:

It was founded by a group of refugees coming from the nearby towns of Vico, Vasco and Carassone after a rebellion against their lord, the Asti bishop, and originally named Monteregale. During the 16th century it was a flourishing centre, more populated than Turin itself, thanks to the establishment of a University in 1560 and a thriving printing trade.

WHAT TO SEE:

  • the historical centres of Piazza and Breo, rich of gothic and baroque palaces, embellished by works of art
  • the panoramic cableway
  • the Cathedral of San Donato
  • the 14th-century Belvedere Tower, 29 metre high, offering a spectacular, all-round view of the plain and surrounding mountains.
