Situated at 62 km from Turin along the left bank of the Stura river, this picturesque Alpine village surrounded by larch woods is the highest in the Lanzo valleys. Balme is an important summer and winter resort, with ski facilities leading to Pakino, Alberon and Prassec, and also a starting point for climbing.

HISTORY:

It was the native place of one among the best known alpine guides of the 19th century, Antonio Castagneri nicknamed "Toni dei Tuffi", who had climbed a record 46 first summits before disappearing in 1890 on Mont Blanc.

WHAT TO SEE:

  • The Pian della Mussa, a wide plateau at 1708 m a.s.l., crossed by the Stura stream and surrounded by high mountains, a wide grasslands area that rises where once was a glacier and then a lake. The spring water of the Plain is known all over the province, and many on summer Sundays are the people that visit the Plain to get their water supply.
