Garzigliana

Province of Torino, Piemonte (Piedmont-Piemont) Region, Italy

The Locality: This small agricultural town 40 km from Turin, south of Pinerolo, rises amid the hills crossed by the Chisone, Pellice and Chiamogna stream; the main cultivations are fruit orchards and vineyards, producing the renowned Frola grapes, used in the preparazion of a number of Piedmontese wines.

HISTORY: Garzigliana was first mentioned in a document of 1098, as belonging to the Cavour family, and in 1235 passed under Amadeus IV Savoy, and in the following centuries followed the destiny of the Savoy dukedom. In the early 16th century the area was a battlefield between the Savoy and French troops. At the time Garzigliana with Montebruno was under the Luserna lords, but in 1701 the town became an independent municipality.

WHAT TO SEE:
The remains of the Montebruno castle, where in 1255 in a battle between the Saluzzo and Monferrato lords Tommaso II Savoy was taken prisoner by the Asti troops.
