Sestriere

Sestriere is an alpine village in Italy, located 17 km from the border with France and 105 km from Turin, between the Val Chisone and the Alta Valle di Susa and is a famous winter tourist center, a paradise for skiers. The town of Sestriere is divided into four districts: Sestriere Colle, Sestrere Borgata, Champlas du Col e Champlas Janvier.

It is part of the ski resorts called Via Lattea with Claviere, Sauze d'Oulx, Cesana and Sansicario. The most interesting ski tracks are Banchetta, Fraiteve, Sises, Rio Nero. The Conca del Sestriere is one of the most popular ski resorts throughout the Alps.

HISTORY: The history of Sestriere is strictly related to skiing. At the beginning of the 1930's the family of Giovanni Agnelli (the FIAT enterpreneurs), wanted to build two towers as hotels, on the hill linking Val Chisone to Val di Susa. Moreover, an area with ski-lifts and other hotels was developed which nowadays is among the best in Europe and where the World Skiing Championships are often held.

EVENTS:
The 2006 Winter Olympics with a number of alpine skiing events to be held on the surrounding slopes: alpine skiing, Nordic combined (Freestyle and Slalom skiing), skeleton, bobsleigh, luge, Giant Slalom, Super G, ski jumping and cross-country skiing disciplines. About 1,700 people will stay in this village during the Games. The male and female Paralympic Games will also take place here.
It is also a famous start or arrival in popular cycling events, such as the Tour de France and the Giro d'Italia.
