Situated in the Val Formazza, a valley of great landscapes and beautiful, unspoiled environments, Formazza is a very small town, whose economy is largely based on tourism. The territorty lies in the north of the Province, near the border with the Swiss Vallese and Canton Ticino.

HISTORY:
In ancient times the town was inhabited by the Walser, an ethnic minority who emigrated to the Vallese during the 13th century after religious persecutions, and their culture can still be seen in the typical wooden buildings of the village and in the German traditions.

WHAT TO SEE:

The 16th-century Casa Forte, once the residence of the "Ammano", the supreme authority (kind of mayor and judge at the same time) in Formazza, and the seat of the local parliament. Today, it hosts the Ethnographic Museum.
The Cascata del Toce, 143-metre-high, formed by the waters of the Morasco river, visible only on Sundays in the summer, since the water is for the rest of the year enclosed by a dam.
