The town is situated on the Morge hills, descending in terraces to the Adriatic, and is famous for the "Trulli" houses, with white walls and grey cone-shaped domes as roofs. For the presence of this unique architectures Alberobello is included among the UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

The name of Alberobello derives from "silva arboris belli", which refers to a great forest once existing in this area of Apulia. Its coatofarms is a Samnite shield with an azure background, on which appear an oaktree and a knight fighting agains a lion. The emblem was established on 22 june 1797, when the the feudal system was abolished and the first mayor Francesco d'Amore elected.
