HISTORY: The tradition says that the village was founded by the Knights of Malta (also known as Knights Hospitaller, Knights of Rhodes, Cavaliers of Malta, Order of St John of Jerusalem), and in 1258 became a fiedfom of Amelio Count of Molise, who later sold it to the Templars. In 1441 was conquered by the Aragonese, but always remained under the influence of the Templars. All the citizens were excommunicated in 1655 by the Bishop of Volturara for refusing to vow obedience to him. In 1815, when the Congress of Vienna suppressed the Templars, Alberona passed again under the Knights of Malta.
