Celle di San Vito

Province of Foggia, Region Puglia (Apulia), Italy

The Locality: This very small center is located in the middle of the Dauni mountains, and takes its name from an ancient monastery (the celle are the small rooms where the monks used to live) and from the nearby Monte San Vito. The population speaks a dialect of French-provencal origin.

HISTORY: It was founded in the late 14th century under the Anjou domination, and populated with settlers from Provence, France. In later century its history was connected to the larger, nearby town of Troia. In 1815 a ruinous landslide Monte Bernardino caused great damages to the center. The population, around 1000 throughout the 19th century, abandoned the village in large numbers since the early 20th, and the depopulation has continued steadily in the last decades, to the 186 residents registered in the 2001 census.
