Monte Sant'Angelo

Province of Foggia, Region Puglia (Apulia), Italy

The Locality: Situated on a high rock in the southern Gargano, overlooking the Tavoliere plateau and the Manfredonia Gulf takes its name from the tradition that in 493 AD here Archangel Michael appeared in a grotto, and the nearby town of Siponto was able to defeat the barbarians. Bishop Maioranus therefore consecrated a church to St. Michael, which has become a pilgrimage site since then.
