HISTORY: The medieval borough rose in the 11th century, founded by refugees from the town of Montecorvino, but was destroyed during the invasion of Roger II in 1137; it was rebuilt in the course of the following century, to be again destroyed by the army of Alphonse of Aragon in mid-15th century. Rebuilt again, it grew to prosperity under the fiefdom of the Carafa family. In the last century there was a high emigration, with the population from over 2500 inhabitants in the 1936 census to 951 in 2001. The coat of arms represents a saint - St John or St Christopher - holding a cross, next to a rock.
