Roseto Valfortore

Province of Foggia, Region Puglia (Apulia), Italy

The Locality: Situated at the foot of Monte Stillo, in Daunia upper Fortore Valley, near a forested area where a therapeutic spring is found. The name probably derives from the abundance of rosebushes and the Fortore river. Since 1912 a large number of rosetani settled in Pennsylvania founding a town of the same name.

HISTORY: The ancient Roman town Rositum was fortified in the Byzanthine period to block the Launguebard invasion of the region Apulia. In 1266 after the Benevento battle it came under the rule of Giacomo d'Assinio, then in the 14th century passed under the Di Capua and later the Saggese families.
