Porto Empedocle

Province of Agrigento, Sicilia (Sicily, Sizilien), Italy

It is an important port on the coast of the Strait of Sicily for mineral products and for the chemicals produced by the local industries, specialized in agriculture, fishing, ironworking, pharmaceuticals and rock salt refining. It is also known as the native place of playright Luigi Pirandello.

HISTORY: King Charles V ordered a tower built to protect the territory's reserves of harvested grain in the fifteenth century. The tower was later converted to a prison and is now a social and cultural center.

Trade increased in the area after the completion of the harbor wall in 1763. The comune became autonomous in 1853, and took the name of Molo di Girgenti, changing to its present name - derived from the Agrigentine philosopher Empedocles, in 1863.
