Locality

The town, an important agricultural center, is located in the center of Sicily, towering above the surrounding countryside, and is well connected through the autostrada A19. It has earned the nicknames of "belvedere" (viewpoint) or the "ombelico" (navel) of Sicily, because of its height and the central position in the island.

The weather in Enna:


HISTORY: The colony of Henna was founded on this high plateau in 664 BC by colonists from Gela eager to exploit the area's agricultural resources. In 397 BC the town fell to Dionysius of Syracuse and it remained in Syracusan hands until the 3rd century BC when it entered the orbit of Roman power.

In 859 AD it was the turn of the Saracens, who had to sneak in one by one through a swer to breach the town's strong defenses. The name was then altered into Castrogiovanni, by which it was known until 1927, when it was changed back to Enna.

  • Palazzo Varisano
  • The Castello di Lombardia, 13th century, built by Frederick II on the site of a previous Arab stronghold. Today only six remain of the original 20 towers placed around the walls. Inside there were courtyards, one of which, the Cortile degli Armati, is today used as an open-air theatre; in the Cortile di San Martino there are remains of Frederick II's residence.

    From the Torre Pisana, the best preserved and the highest of the towers, the visitors can get a spectacular, unique view of the whole island of Sicily.
