HISTORY: The site was inhabited in Roman times by barracks of slaves employed in supplying timber for the ships. Surely, due to its altitude and cold winter climate, it was mostly inhabited in the summer by shepherds from the Simeto plains.
In the 14th century the site was a fiefdom of Peregrino De Pactis, then passed to Antonio Quintanas Duegna in 1619, to the Ardoino, the Moncada d'Alcontres and finally to the last feudal lords, Stagno d'Alcontres.
In 1820 Florenza became an autonomous municipality. In the late 19th century the bitterness of the climate and the poor economy led a large part of the inhabitants to emigration. Only recently the institution of the natural park and a keener sensibility for environments untouched by civilization has given rise to a tourist-based economy.
