Cortona

Cortona is a small town, beautifully set on a hill high above the Val di Chiana plain, famous as the base for some scenes in Roberto Benigni's film Life is Beautiful and as the setting for the 2004 film Under the Tuscan Sun. Cortona was one of the 12 ancient Etruscan cities (the Dodecapolis), and it was also important during Roman times. Parts of the Etruscan city wall can still be seen today as the base of the present walls that surround the town.

What to see:

The the Diocesan Museum, preserving two panels by Fra Angelico, an Annunciation and a Madonna and Child with Saints.
The church of San Domenico with a fresco above the entrance also by Fra' Angelico, likewise painted during his stay at Cortona in 1436.
