History

The town was founded according to the legend in the 11th century by two pilgrims, Arcano and Egidio, on their way back from the Holy Land, who established here an oratorium, on the spot where the present cathedral rises today. Around the monastery people gathered and built their homes, then in the 15th century the settlement was surrounded by walls built on a project of Giuliano da Sangallo.
