Alberese

Province of Grosseto, Toscana (Tuscany) Region, Italy

About 16 km south of Grosseto, this center is the entrance to the Parco Naturale della Maremma - also known as the Parco dell'Uccellina - established thanks to the Opera Nazionale Combattenti following 1918, when many Istrian refugees moved to these areas on lands confiscated by the State. These settlers were able to cultivate the lands and respect at the same time the strong naturalistic identity of this area of Maremma. Still today, free-ranging horses and oxen populate the prairies.

WHAT TO SEE:

  • Natural grottos, such as the Scoglietto, where traces of prehistoric man were found.
  • Etruscan ruins at Poggio Raso and Roman remains at Santa Francesca and Le Frasche.
  • The Monastery of San Rabano, one of the most interesting medieval monuments in Maremma. A Benedictine Abbey originally named Santa Maria Alborese, which ruled over the area for five centuries, until the Benedictine order passed it to the Malta Knights. In 1926 it was assigned to the Opera Nazionale Combattenti, an organization which recovered the lands from the marshes, and today is state property.
  • The beautiful incontaminated beach at Marina di Alberese, in the heart of the Parco Regionale della Maremma.
