Abetone

Abetone, Tuscany, Italy

Abetone was founded only in recent times between 1766 and 1779, when the road between Tuscany and the territory of Modena was built, and was at first only a resting place for the travelers on their way.

The name was given because of the presence of a huge fir tree, with a circumference that six men together were not able to cover. The place is today a summer and winter resort, and is also known as the birthplace or skier Zeno Colò.

What to see:

The Piramidi, two imposing monuments built at the top of the mountain pass, on a project by architect Leonardo Ximenes, marking originally the border between the Grand Dukedom of Tuscany and the Dukedom of Modena, when the Strada Regia Modenese was built.
The church of San Leopoldo at the entrance of the small town, built in the late 18th century.
Natural Reserve of Campolino, established to protect a population of red fir, where a wealth of other vegetaion can be seen, such as the purple gentian, the red lily, wild geraniums and carnations, and wide areas of blackberry bushes. The area can be visited only in the summer, with guides of the C.F.S. (0573 - 60231)
Biogenetic Reserve of Abetone, with majestic white fir populations, many of them with a circumference of over 4 mt.
