The small "city of flowers" on the banks of the homonymous river, located centrally between the cities Lucca and Florence, and also near to Pisa, is famous for its Flower Market and the Adventures of Pinocchio, whose author was born in the small hamlet of Collodi. There are two different centres, one with a castle for lay and commercial activities of the left bank of the river and the second with the cathedral for religious activities on the right bank. The economy is based on flower growing (especially carnations) and paper production, with a Museum of Paper in Pietrabuona.

History: Archaeological excavations show that Lombards built the first settlement on the river banks, and the name of the city comes from a Lombard word, which means river. During the entire Middle Ages Florence and Lucca contended for the commune, located on the border between the two republics, and finally Florence occupied it.
The economy of the city was founded on the mulberry cultivation and on the silkworm breeding, about which a legend said that it was imported in Europe for the first time by a monk from Pescia. Bombardaments during World War 2 highly damaged Pescia, but the city was quickly rebuilt, and world Flower Market began.
