The small town is situated in a mountainous area along the border with the province of Rieti. In the past its economy was amainly based on agriculture and sheep breeding, but recently it has undergone a remarkable tourist development as a winter sports center.

History

In the late Middle Ages it was a fiefdom of the Polino family, then passed under the Arrone eand later under the Castelli family from Terni, who built the beatiful castle, still remarkably preserved. It was an important strategic border point between the CHurch State and the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies, and a mint thanks to the presence of a gold mine in the area.
