History
Portobuffole' is famous especially for Gaia da Camino, so well known in her times to be mentioned by Dante in the 16th canto of the Purgatory. In 1307 Gaia received as a gift from her husband Tolberto da Camino the port of Settimo on the Livenza river, and moved there with all her court. In this way Settimo (present day Portobuffole') became an important river port. The place came then under the rule of the Venice Republic, and shared the prosperity and later decline with the Serenissima.
What to see:
The historical center, across the bridge on the ancient riverbed, with the romanesque Porte Priuli, Loggia, Duomo and Torresin, as well as the townhall Tower (Torre Comunale) the only left of the medieval defence system based on seven towers.
The house of Gaia da Camino, a typical 14th century mansion, today the seat of a museum of cycling, preserving frescoes representing medieval warrior and characters. One of the frescoes shows the forrtified borough protected by an eagle, the emblem of the da Camino family.
