Mira was a favourite place of the venetians, who constructed numerous villas such as Villa Cantarini dei Leoni where Napoleon spent some time. Included in the Riviera del Brenta, a renowned tourist area near to Venice, Mira was founded in the Middle Ages by the boat people of the river.
The original name was Cazoxana, then it was changed to the present name from the more famous Mira home of San Nicolo' from Mira, patron of the people working on inland waters. Today the traditional river trade has given place to a flourishing tourism of river cruises.
