History: It was a very ancient settlement since the end of the Bronze Age. In the Roman period, there was a “Gens Bassia” (from whom the name). From the XI to the XV century the city was at first under the dominion of the Ezzelino lords, then it became a free municipality, later falling under the rule of the Vicentinis, and finally under the enlightened government of the Can Grande della Scala lordship, and from the 14th century onwards its fortunes were linked to those of the the Venice Republic. During the peaceful period of Venice’s political independence, the city became a famous manufacturing centre for ceramics, iron, copper, wool and silk, as well as goldsmith. From the Risorgimento until the Second World War the city was in the front line of national defence, and its name was associated with Mount Grappa, the sacred mount of World War One.
